East Baton Rouge Parish residents will be able to bring their household hazardous materials to the City-Parish’s Spring 2023 Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day Saturday, March 18, from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. The semi-annual collection day will be located at LSU’s Touchdown Village Parking Lot, located on South Quad Drive, across from Engineering Lane. Officials say residents should remain in their vehicles while workers collect their materials. Guests will learn more about the award-winning author's writing process and inspiration for her new novel, which is centered around a fifteen-year-old girl named Ruby Pearsall who is on track to become the first member of her family to attend college. In the story, Ruby's future as a college graduate is threatened when her mother becomes embroiled in a clandestine love affair. The teen's dreams seem on the precipice of going up in smoke when the affair pushes Ruby back towards the state of poverty she's been desperately attempting to escape. Johnson is the award-winning author of four novels, including Yellow Wife. Her accolades include the National Book Club Award, the Phillis Wheatley Book Award, and the USA Best Book Award for Best Fiction. She is a Kimbilio Fellow, former board member of the James River Writers, and a Tall Poppy Writer. TANGIPAHOA PARISH, La. - Severe weather left south Louisiana rain soaked and under multiple storm warning on the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 8.
The National Weather Service (NWS) around 5:59 p.m. confirmed that a tornado passed through the parish, just north of the town of Tangipahoa.
The all-clear regarding the tornado was given by 6:20 p.m., but weather experts warned that other storms were still severe in parts of the area and locals were asked to tune in to weather reports from local news stations to stay safe.
As of 8:45 p.m., Louisiana's capital region is experiencing light rain and the temperature is around 73 degrees, according to the NWS. According to the City Parish, the National Weather Service (NWS) is reporting that Baton Rouge will be hit with at least one to two inches of rain. Over the weekend, East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome encouraged weather safety during a heavy rainstorm, and days later she's once again urging caution as the Parish prepares for its second severe weather event of the week. "Take time to clean out your gutters and downspouts before Thursday. Ensure you have a way to receive multiple weather alerts. Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather reports as Thursday approaches. Use caution while traveling on roadways.
